$20B Device Tax Included in Latest Obama Healthcare Proposal

Would take effect in 2013.

A 10-year $20 billion tax on medical device manufacturers has been resurrected from a previous healthcare reform proposal in President Barack Obama’s latest pitch, which was released today. The tax would take effect in 2013.

Obama’s proposal comes ahead of a Feb. 25 summit on healthcare reform that the president has planned in hopes that the two sides can reach some areas of agreement.

The president is pushing healthcare reform after the U.S. Senate lost its filibuster-proof majority when Republican Scott Brown filled the late Democrat Sen. Edward Kennedy’s seat.
